What the Expert's says about BlackBerry and BBRY?
Delphi Automotive and BlackBerry will partner on a software operating system for self-driving cars.
Delphi already has developed a turnkey self-driving system called CSLP that it plans to begin selling to smaller automakers in 2019, for production in 2021. Most larger vehicle manufacturers are developing their own self-driving systems.
Glen De Vos, Delphi's chief technology officer, said BlackBerry QNX would provide an operating system that was already certified to high levels of safety for Delphi's CSLP system, which uses software developed by Delphi's Ottomatika unit.
Paul Treiber, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto said:
“We believe that BlackBerry may make acquisitions of companies to strengthen its business in three areas,”
They include enterprise software and
1.) cybersecurity
2.) embedded automotive software
3.) telematics.
“Acquired businesses may add complementary technology, help consolidate market share, or strengthen distribution,” Treiber added.
Clearly, BlackBerry has a lot of options in front of it.
While investors will likely focus on how the takeover valuation compares to BlackBerry’s, as well as profitability of any company acquired, and whether its organic growth exceeds that of BlackBerry, the longer-term implications of any purchase should be much more important.
